The Plastics Extrusion World Expo returns to
Cleveland, Ohio

 

Following the successful launch in 2019, the Plastics Extrusion World Expo returns to the Huntington Convention Center in down town Cleveland. This event brings together professionals from across the plastics extrusion industry for two days of networking, knowledge sharing and innovation. The free-to-attend trade show will run alongside the Compounding World Expo, Plastics Recycling World Expo and Polymer Testing World Expo.

Exhibitor Interview: CMG Granulators

Ahead of the upcoming Plastics Recycling World Expo in Europe, we spoke to Giorgio Santella, General Manager, CMG Granulators. 

CMG Granulators designs and produces solutions for recycling applications in the plastics industry, represented by granulators, shredders, integral feed conveyors, regrind evacuation and conveying systems and powder separation executions.


What do you think sets your company apart from your competitors?

Product and application innovations substantiated by the launch of new equipment and solutions and innovative patent pending designs, fully proprietary. All our equipment is certified for Industry 4.0 compliancy.

 

Are there any new technology developments that your company is working on at the moment?

Yes, we have been very active in the latest three years with new developments. For plastics processors/converters, those that produce plastic objects, we have introduced a very innovative line of beside-the-press granulators, the G17 series. Along with featuring the highest degree of regrind dimensional homogeneity, the very small dimensions of the regrind and the absence of powder make the G17 series the ideal choice for all those that produce highly technical parts, generally utilizing very costly polymers in injection processes producing a relatively large sprue/cold runner.

In the field of plastics recycling, CMG Granulators has always been a supplier of large capacity heavy duty recyclers-grade granulators, and lately we have introduced two new machine series: the Evolution line, represented by highly energy efficient solutions delivering the industry highest input/output ratio, and a brand new medium capacity series, that has all the features a recyclers-grade machine must have, but for intermediate capacity applications.

A very new innovation is the Bio-Gran line. The Bio-Gran is applicable to the processes of production of biodegradable flexible packaging and allows the immediate recycling and reintroduction of both production scrap and rejects. Bio-Gran is a patent pending technology and is a fully proprietary development of CMG Granualtors.

 

What are the biggest challenges facing the industry today and how can this be overcome?

I my opinion one of the most challenging objectives is mass produce r-Polymers with a high degree of quality (r-polymers having virgin polymer like physical characteristics and mechanical performance). High r-Polymer percentage reintroduction, blended with virgin polymers, or in some cases utilized at 100%, to produce new plastic objects, is possible only if r-Polymers carry virgin-like characteristics. The utilization of conventional equipment/machinery though will not allow such goal to be reached. Old style granulators were part of the “size reduction” machinery category. Size reduction equipment was designed to perform logistics optimization in waste management.

Our purpose designed granulators instead, are machines that play an essential role in the process of recycling plastics and are utilized in high value processes. The CMG granulators offer the highest degree possible of regrind dimensional homogeneity, element that is key to increasing the efficiency of any recycling line/plant. The very big difference between reducing a plastic object into smaller pieces (old style) versus granulating it into homogeneous regrind is represented by the higher output obtainable. Not only, regrind granulometry homogeneity is the main contributor to quality and mechanical features of any r-Polymer.

 

How do you see the sector developing in the next five to ten years?

The plastics recycling sector will face a considerable growth in the nesx 5 to 10 years. The growth will be very homogenous in every country in the worlds. The most industrially active and structured with lead the path and the smaller will follow. Our strategy as a technology provider is develop innovative solutions and structure our organization to support the growth of the recycling industry globally. 

 

What are you most looking forward to at this years’ show? 

Our objective is to meet as much sector specialists as possible and present our company and innovative technologies. This may seem obvious, but it is not, particularly in the recycling industry. Recycling is virtuous and innovative by nature; the world needs plastic to be recycled and the first objective is getting rid of the plastic being polluted. How such plastic is recycled though, with which degree of efficiency and to what level of quality is incorrectly perceived as a “secondary priority”. In a world that embraces more and more the Circular Economy principles, we cannot stop at the elimination of waste, but need to also look at resource utilization optimization and nature regeneration.
